Features
The physical nature of phonograph records makes it very difficult to accurately represent and reproduce bass frequencies, and high frequencies have to compete with surface noise. The groove in a record is an analog representation of the frequencies produced by playing a piece of music. But because lower frequencies can literally pop a needle out of the groove, they are attenuated before the record is pressed.
When the record is played back the Phono Preamp boosts the frequencies, essentially returning the low-end ingredients of the music. To help overcome noise, high frequencies are boosted before the record is stamped. The Phono Preamp reduces these frequencies upon playback.
Here’s the trick: the frequencies that are added and removed are not random and they don’t change from record to record. In fact, the equalization curve is a standard developed by the RIAA. So every record made since circa 1955 has used the RIAA equalization curve. And stereo receivers with phono inputs should more or less add and remove the right spice of frequencies to accurately reproduce your music.
If you were to try and play records without a proper preamp, such as using a tape or CD input on a receiver, the levels would be extremely low, hissy and lack bass frequencies. If you were to plug directly into the microphone jack on a sound card, the level might be acceptable but the sound would still be hollow, hissy and lack bass.
What’s so cool about the TerraTec phono preamp is its portable size. Now you don’t have to haul out your old clunky receiver just to digitize records into your PC. Essentially TerraTec has reduced the clutter factor from a full size stereo component to a pack of cigarettes.
In use
The TerraTec Phono Preamp works with all moving magnet pickups and includes selectable input capacity and output amplification to fine-tune the signal for your particular setup. It gets its power from the joystick/MIDI/game port on your sound card or motherboard.
Simply plug your turntable into the preamp and the preamp output into the line input on your sound card. The inputs are standard RCA cables and the output is a miniplug.
Next, open the mixer panel of your sound card and make sure the fader for the channel you plugged into is up. Any standard audio software can be used to record your records. The best results are obtained with a package that has good metering for setting recording levels
Prior to acquiring the TerraTec Phono Preamp, I used a full-size Adcom stereo preamp with my trusty old Technics turntable and Grado cartridge to record my records. It was a bit of a hassle because I had to run an extra set of patchcords from the preamp to my mixer and then to my computer. Plus, the output levels are controlled by the volume knob and required quite a bit a tinkering to find the optimal level.
In comparison to my Adcom preamp, the TerraTec box sounds great. As with any audio chain, all the links have to be clean. My records are not in the best of shape; I could use a new cartridge and my turntable has seen better days. With a little noise reduction and some sweetening, however, I’m bringing my old collection back to life.
Summary
The TerraTec Phono Preamp is a useful tool that works well for digitizing vinyl and can help reduce the clutter in your studio. I think the company could do well with this product, especially if it drops the price below $50. Currently, the preamp sells for $79.

TERRATEC delivers the first two of three TBMs that will be used by Gulermak-Tata Projects JV for the underground works on Line 1 of the Pune Metro, in India.
TERRATEC is pleased to announce the delivery of the first two of three 6.61m diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPBMs) that will be used by Gulermak-Tata Projects Limited for its underground works contracts on Line 1 of the new Pune Metro Rail Project, in Maharashtra, India, following successful factory testing of the S78 and S79 machines this month.
Earlier this year, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) announced that the joint venture had won both of the twin-tube tunnel packages on the new 16.56km-long north-south metro corridor. The 5km underground section – which runs from the College of Agriculture in Shivajinagar to Swargate and has five stations – is considered the most challenging portion of the line, as it passes under the densely populated areas of Kasba Peth, Budhwar Peth and Mandai market.

'We are now ready to launch TERRATEC TBMs S78 and S79 – which will be known as ‘Mutha’ and ‘Mula’ – as both these machines were successfully tested at TERRATEC’s factory by our engineers and found fit to be despatched to our Pune Metro site,” said Ashish Dwivedi, Geotechnical Manager for the Gulermak-TPL JV. “TERRATEC TBMs have a very successful track record in India, with seven of the company’s machines currently completing tunnels for Mumbai Metro, and we expect to complete excavation on Pune Metro within the project schedule for our 5km of Line 1 TBM tunnels.'
Major challenges on the project will include tunnelling beneath century-old surface structures, crossing under the river Mutha and TBM lowering and dismantling in the very built-up areas of Budhwarpeth and Mandai stations with limited access available.

The versatile TERRATEC EPBMs have robust mixed-face dome-style cutterheads designed to work effectively in the compact Basalt that is expected on these contracts at pressures of up to 4 bar. As the TBMs progress, they will install 1,400mm wide by 275mm thick pre-cast concrete lining rings, which consist of five segments plus a key.
The TBMs have already been despatched from TERRATEC’s factory in China and are currently being shipped to the port of Mumbai. Both machines are expected to arrive in November and will be transported to Pune where they will be assembled and then tested on-site in mid-December.
Pune is an industrial city that has witnessed much growth in the areas of corporate and industrial infrastructure over the last decade. Existing roads in the city currently carry an average of 8,000 commuters an hour in each direction. The city experiences high traffic during peak hours that leads to long hours of traffic jams along with increased pollution.
The Pune Metro aims to provide a solution to the above issues by offering a safe and eco-friendly journey with a 50% reduction in travel time. When complete, in 2022, Pune’s Metro network will comprise three rail corridors with a total length of 54.5km.
In recent years, TERRATEC has emerged as the leading TBM supplier in the Indian market, having supplied 24 TBMs in the last six years alone (more than all other TBM manufacturers combined over the same period). TERRATEC’s continuing success on projects such as Phase III of the Delhi Metro, Lucknow Metro, the Ahmadabad Metro and Mumbai Metro is a result of tailor-made robust TBM design, prompt onsite assistance, a readily available stock of TBM spares and highly-skilled specialised TBM support throughout tunnelling operations.
