PK-900 Software...Is this group active?

#421

Having owned a PK-900 for many years as most of you. I bought every Upgrade Timewave sells. PK-232 also... I know it is sad to see the low usage of it here. It was a great TNC, but time has moved on.
Or has it? I wonder if anyone has success in making it work with the Sound Card install ,and what software you might be using.
I have the older versions of
PC PakRatt. It is a free download at Timewave. And I still have XPware etc... I want more...
In QST this month I saw that Timewave was advertising
PC PakRatt on their page as 'New'! It says working with Windows 10. But they have advertised it in the past and it never appeared. Has anyone heard more?
Is anyone using the Sound Card Upgrade with current modes PSK, JT65 or FT8? What software is working for you?
And we can also hope that a New Release of
PC PakRatt is real. I'd love for all the upgrades I paid for made useful...

I use my upgraded pk-232sc on a regular basis with an elecraft K3 and a pk-232sc+ with an elecraft kx3. They are still great units!!
Timewave keeps advertising a new version of PakRatt in QST...I wonder when it will be available?

Bill I gave up years ago on getting my stock PK900 working and got a signalink usb. It seems to have a corrupted eprom.
#427

Hi Bill !!

I have a working PK900, and if you want I can copy the contents of the (EP)ROM and send the fex file to and so that you can burn the info

in a new EPROM.

I can even send you a freshly programmed EPROM with the firmware in it..

Cheers

Hi Bill, in answer to the sound card upgrade, they left out one very important function - PTT. As it turns out, the only thing the sound card interface does is, provides audio isolation, which is kinda useless without PTT. Money wasted I am afraid. The PTT issue could be resolved with alternate wiring if one had the time. I am going to have to agree that the SignaLink USB is a much better option.
I use the PK-900 daily on Pactor P1 and it still does well. Runs a lot cooler than the DSP-2232. I use either PcPakRatt or XPWare host mode programs, which run in a WinXP Pro VM on Win10. I believe AirMail, DXLabs and HRD also has drivers built into the software.
FYI for reference, my PK-900 had a xtal problem which affected the display and modes. Once replaced all issues were resolved.

Hi John,
Thanks for a very informative note. I wasn't aware of the PTT issue. I use a Navigator on FT8 but have been hoping to use at l;east the PK-900 on some new mode. I have the upgraded PK-232 also and having spent all this money wanted to make some of it worthwhile...
Maybe everyone will get tired of FT-8 etc and come back to RTTY....probably not!
I'm pretty sure Randy is on all these lists and maybe he will read it and provide a fix or an escape route...

I was truly hoping someone would correct me regarding the PTT issue. Like you, I enjoy other digital modes (e.g. ARDOP Chat and ARIM). I had also wanted to make use of the PK-900. Alas, not to be. Timewave has been hinting of a new hostmode software since last Nov and Dec. I have heard comments from others calling it vaporware. Hopefully they have Alpha/Beta Testers working the new software.
One other thing that I forgot to mention is that G8BPQ wrote drivers for the PK-232 Pactor mode integrating the TNC into the BPQ suite of software. I tried this once but was unsuccessful. Probably my error. Back to the grind.

Are you referring to the PK-232sc upgrade or the PK-900 soundcard isolation upgrade?

The 232SC does isolate the PTT circuit if you are using the new rig control interface that came with the SC upgrade.
